Papers, 1917-1919.

Correspondence, newspapers, and photographs documenting Hopkins' service with the United States Army Ambulance Service during World War I. Collection (1917-19) includes seventeen letters written in Europe or enroute to Europe. Letters describe monotony of sailing and combat activity. Eighteen photographs portray training in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Issue three of the unit-published newspaper, The Exhaust (1919) contains Hopkins' artwork and a biographical sketch.

Walter Leland Hopkins was born in Marysville, Ohio in 1898. He attended the Oberlin Academy in 1912-13 and 1915-16. In June 1917, he enlisted in the United States Army Ambulance Service, joining the Princeton University unit, Section 523. The unit served with the French Armed Forces in the 35th Division, and saw extensive action. Hopkins worked for Tiffany Studios in New York following his military service.
